Vampire Crawlers: The Next Evolution in Survivors-Style Games?
Indie developer Poncle has officially announced Vampire Crawlers, a standalone spin-off of its breakout hit Vampire Survivors. Revealed during the recent Xbox Partner Preview, the game is scheduled to launch in early–to–mid 2026 on a wide range of platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices.
Poncle strikes again!
While the original Vampire Survivors became a global phenomenon thanks to its auto-attacking, horde-survival formula, Vampire Crawlers marks a valiant shift into new territory. This entry transforms the familiar pixel-art chaos of the franchise into a turn-based roguelite deckbuilder, blending strategic card play with first-person dungeon exploration. According to Poncle founder Luca Galante, the goal is to preserve the series' trademark power escalation while giving players the freedom to play "slow and thoughtful or extremely fast," depending on their preferred pace.
At the center of the experience is a card-driven combat system. Each turn requires players to play cards in increasing mana order, building long and increasingly destructive chains. Special "wild" cards can extend combos even further, allowing for outrageous multi-card stacks — sometimes dozens of actions deep. As players progress, they'll unlock new cards, discover treasure, strengthen weapons, and even summon additional allies to trigger cascading synergies that intentionally push the game's systems to their limits.
Dungeon exploration is another major departure from the original game. Vampire Crawlers will feature maze-like environments with proper walls, hidden rooms, buried floors, and secret areas to uncover. Players can stumble into treasure vaults, descend through the earth using a shovel, or even dig their way into airborne dungeons suspended in the clouds. Poncle describes the experience as a modern spin on classic "blobber" RPGs of the 1980s, but driven entirely through card interactions instead of traditional directional movement.
The spin-off also expands the franchise's business footprint. The game will be available on all major storefronts, with a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, ensuring wide accessibility from the start. Poncle is handling both development and publishing, continuing its hands-on approach established with the original Vampire Survivors.
Critical and community response has already been enthusiastic. Early previews highlight the game's absurdly inventive mechanics, playful tone, and unwavering commitment to the "escalating madness" fans of Vampire Survivors expect. Many critics have pointed out that while Vampire Crawlers significantly diverges in structure, it retains the energy and charm that helped spark the so-called "VampSurv-like" genre.
With its genre-bending design, wide platform availability, and ambitious new systems, Vampire Crawlers has all the elements needed o to become Poncle’s next breakout release. For veterans of the original game, it offers a fresh and surprising evolution of the formula; for new players, it presents a stylish and accessible entry point into one of the most influential indie universes of the decade.
