Nintendo confirms Switch dominance as its best-selling console ever
The Nintendo Switch has officially set a new all-time sales record for Nintendo, becoming the most successful piece of hardware in the company’s history. Since its debut in 2017, the hybrid console has consistently sold at an impressive pace. Continued demand has been supported by hardware revisions such as the Switch Lite and Switch OLED, and what once seemed inevitable has now become reality.
In its latest financial report, Nintendo confirmed that the Switch has reached 155.37 million units sold worldwide. This milestone pushes it past the Nintendo DS, which previously held the record with 154.02 million units sold. For further perspective, the Switch now outsells the Nintendo Wii by more than 50 million units and exceeds Nintendo 64 sales by over 120 million units. It stands as Nintendo’s most successful console ever, setting an extremely high bar for the Switch 2 to match.

Despite the launch of the Switch 2, Nintendo continues to sell the original Switch as a more affordable gaming option. While the Switch now reigns supreme within Nintendo’s catalog, Sony’s PlayStation 2 still holds the global crown as the best-selling console of all time, with 160 million units sold over its lifespan. Whether the original Switch can overtake that figure remains uncertain.
Even with its higher price point, the Switch 2 is performing well in the market. However, it may struggle to replicate the extraordinary long-term success of the original Switch, which benefited from a lower entry price and unique circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic. That said, the Switch 2 is still early in its lifecycle, leaving room for growth and potential momentum over time.
With the Nintendo Switch now officially recognized as Nintendo’s best-selling console ever, the impact of its hybrid design is undeniable. That legacy now continues with the Nintendo Switch 2, offering improved performance, enhanced visuals, and the next generation of Nintendo experiences.
