Virtual Boy returns with classic VR for Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo has revealed that the Virtual Boy console will be returning as a “Nintendo Classics” experience for owners of the Switch and Switch 2.
Virtual Boy titles will be available on both Switch systems via Nintendo's “Switch Online + Expansion Pack” service, launching on February 17th, 2026. It’s important to note that this Virtual Boy emulation will necessitate new Nintendo hardware, requiring users to buy a plastic Virtual Boy headset that accommodates their Switch and Switch 2 consoles.
The new Virtual Boy accessory resembles the original from the 90s and comes with its distinctive desk stand. It includes lenses and all necessary components to make the Switch/Switch 2 capable of virtual reality. At launch, the headset will feature 14 Virtual Boy titles through the Nintendo Switch Online emulation service, including Wario Land, Galactic Pinball, Red Alarm, Teleroboxer, Mario Tennis, Vertical Force, Mario Clash, Golf, Tetris 3D, Virtual Bowling, and Space Invaders. Additional games will be added “over time.”
This means that almost all of the Virtual Boy games ever released will be accessible through Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo only launched 22 games since the Virtual Boy was not successful. The company ceased production of the device and stopped game development for it in 1996, just a year after the Virtual Boy was introduced to consumers. We can only hope that the new version of the accessory doesn’t cause too many issues for players.
The revival of the Virtual Boy for the Switch 2 isn’t simply a nostalgic gesture; it also underscores the new console’s capabilities. With its enhanced specifications and a fully functional Virtual Boy accessory, the Switch 2 demonstrates its ability to accommodate both classic favorites and contemporary gaming needs. For those looking for a compelling reason to upgrade, this mix of retro appeal and modern technology could be the ideal motivation to make the switch.
