Beware of the 'surprisingly cheap' RTX 4090 graphics card

Nvidia’s high-end RTX 4090 has become a target for counterfeiters, with a recent case in China exposing an alarmingly sophisticated scam. A fake Palit RTX 4090, visually identical to the real thing, was discovered to contain an older RTX 3090 GPU. It was sold for just $530—far below the genuine market price.

A video on Bilibili showed a user unboxing and disassembling the card, which initially appeared factory-new. However, removing the cooling system revealed a GA102 GPU instead of the expected AD102, as used in previous-generation RTX 3090 and 3080 Ti models. Fraudsters exploited the similar sizes and pin configurations of these chips to deceive buyers.

The unusually low price should have raised red flags, yet it was overlooked. More concerning is the level of sophistication: scammers sanded down the GA102 chip to erase markings before laser-etching AD102-like codes. Experts later found discrepancies, including misaligned capacitors and unlabeled memory chips—details an average buyer might miss.

Typically, fake graphics cards can be identified by their lower performance or their inability to install Nvidia drivers. However, this counterfeit RTX 4090 didn’t even boot up, making software-based verification impossible.

This incident is not an isolated case. The market has previously seen many counterfeit graphics cards assembled from mixed components, often referred to as 'Frankenstein' cards. Last year, another fake Asus TUF RTX 4090 using a GA102 GPU was exposed. There have even been cases where RTX 4090 cards were sold with empty shells or fitted with lower-tier GPUs and defective components. Buyers should be cautious and verify hardware authenticity before purchasing.
