ASUS investigates stuttering issues on ROG gaming laptops
Following reports of a firmware issue in numerous ASUS ROG gaming laptops, ASUS has confirmed the initiation of a formal investigation into these “stuttering” problems. These concerns were highlighted by Zephkek on GitHub, who noted that certain ROG laptops experience stuttering during simple tasks, like watching YouTube videos. Users have reported mouse cursors freezing, audio crackling on Discord, and system freezes. Attempts to resolve the issues included driver updates, clean OS installations, and other potential remedies. This led Zephkek to suggest that the underlying cause is ASUS' firmware.

According to the research shared by Zephkek, a cybersecurity enthusiast skilled in low-level programming, ASUS ROG gaming laptops are plagued by faulty BIOS firmware, resulting in system disruptions. The investigation suggests that the problem does not stem from any pre-installed bloatware, outdated drivers, or the operating system itself. Rather, the root of the issue is deeply intertwined with the design of the ASUS BIOS, where system-level operations and component management take place.
With ASUS now conducting an investigation into these problems, we remain hopeful that these performance issues can be resolved promptly. Are these performance problems a result of defective hardware? Does ASUS face challenges with its firmware or BIOS? Below is ASUS/ROG’s response regarding this situation.
ASUS is experiencing a firmware problem that impacts a significant portion of its ROG laptop lineup from 2021 to 2024. This suggests that a firmware update for the laptops could potentially resolve these performance issues. If this is indeed the case, ROG laptop users may be able to fix these performance concerns without the need for hardware replacements.
