New Xbox Elite Series 3 leak reveals TMR and DualSense-like features

Upcoming Xbox Elite Series 3 gets an early specs leak from Xbox Design Lab

Microsoft's next high-end Xbox controller could be getting closer to an official reveal, with a new leak pointing to several major upgrades for the rumored Elite Series 3. The successor to the Elite Series 2 appears set to offer more durable thumbsticks, advanced haptics, and a wide range of customization options across multiple versions.

Details briefly appeared in the Xbox Design Lab backend before being taken offline. As spotted by Reddit user "esketitethan," the listings reportedly revealed four different Elite Series 3 configurations, with buyers potentially able to choose between TMR and Hall effect thumbsticks as well as versions equipped with advanced haptic feedback. Another report has pointed toward a holiday launch for Microsoft's new premium controller.

The Elite Series 3 has already appeared in leaks several times, including photos of an alleged prototype that surfaced in August. The latest information backs up some of those earlier discoveries while adding more details about how Microsoft plans to differentiate the various models.

One of the biggest changes could be the introduction of TMR and Hall effect thumbsticks. Microsoft and Sony have been slow to adopt these technologies in their flagship controllers, despite their potential to improve durability and precision while reducing the risk of traditional stick drift. If the leaked information is accurate, the Elite Series 3 would finally bring one of these technologies to Microsoft's high-end Xbox lineup.

An Xbox Series X console and controller are displayed on a table. The console is black and rectangular, with the controller in the foreground.

Some versions could also borrow a feature associated with the PS5's DualSense and DualSense Edge. Advanced haptics would replace conventional rumble motors with voice-coil actuators capable of producing more detailed feedback. Impulse triggers are also expected, potentially making actions such as braking in racing games or firing weapons feel more responsive.

The scroll wheels seen on the leaked prototype apparently serve as audio controls by default. The controller is also rumored to switch to a removable rechargeable battery pack, unlike the integrated battery found in the Elite Series 2.

Customization looks set to remain a major selling point. The leak mentions multiple D-pad designs, 27 button and paddle configurations, and different stick sizes aimed at balancing friction and speed. The most complete package could additionally include both top and bottom paddles, a carrying case, and a charging dock. With the Elite Series 3 now appearing in Xbox Design Lab's backend, an announcement could be approaching.

Microsoft has yet to officially confirm the controller or its pricing, so these details should still be treated as leaks until the company makes them official.
