Valve stocks more Steam Frame headsets ahead of an imminent launch
Valve is quietly getting closer to launching the Steam Frame, even though the company still hasn't revealed exactly when the VR headset will arrive or how much it will cost. While the Steam Controller and Steam Machine are already on the market, the Steam Frame remains the missing piece of Valve's latest hardware lineup. New shipping records suggest, however, that preparations are moving along nicely.
According to the latest shipping data, Valve received another Steam Frame shipment on August 6, listed as containing a VR controller, HMD, and VR controller accessory. This marks the 22nd known Steam Frame shipment, suggesting Valve has been steadily building inventory ahead of the headset's eventual launch.
The mysterious VR controller accessory could potentially be the comfort kit Valve is reportedly preparing for the Steam Frame. The kit is expected to include an ergonomic top strap designed to improve comfort during longer VR sessions, which could be particularly useful given the headset's standalone capabilities.
There are other signs that the launch is getting closer, too. The list of games rated Great on Frame continues to expand, covering plenty of native VR titles alongside some more unusual additions. Valve's own VR games were among the earliest to receive certification, while Portal 2 was reportedly the first non-native title verified for the headset. Other games, including the popular deckbuilder Balatro, have since joined the list.
The Steam Frame's biggest question mark remains its price. One insider has previously suggested that the headset could start around $1,500 (approximately €1,290 / £1,120), which would put it well above mainstream VR headsets. That estimate isn't official, though, and Valve has yet to provide any pricing information.
The company has only confirmed a 2026 release window so far. The Steam Frame recently received FCC certification, another encouraging sign that its launch could be approaching. With Valve continuing to receive shipments and expand compatibility testing, an official announcement may not be too far away.
The Steam Frame remains an intriguing prospect thanks to its ability to run games independently, stream content, and wirelessly play demanding PC VR titles. Whether Valve can deliver all of that at a reasonable price will ultimately determine how successful its return to VR becomes.
