Steam to discontinue support for Windows 32-bit systems in 2026
Steam has announced that support for Windows 32-bit operating systems will cease on January 1, 2026. This choice impacts the small group of players still using Windows 10 in its 32-bit setup, which, as per the most recent Steam Hardware Survey from August 2025, represents merely 0.01 percent of active devices. Windows 10 64-bit and other 64-bit systems will continue to receive support, ensuring stability for the overwhelming majority of users.
After the change is implemented, the Steam client on Windows 10 32-bit will still work for a limited time but will no longer receive updates, including crucial security upgrades. Valve has also indicated that Steam Support will cease to offer technical help for problems occurring on unsupported platforms. While 32-bit games will continue to function, the company warned that essential features of the client depend on drivers and system libraries that are incompatible with the 32-bit architecture.

Valve’s recommendation to users is clear: upgrade to a 64-bit edition of Windows to keep receiving updates and security enhancements. This action matches wider industry trends, as hardware and software developers increasingly phase out legacy support to enhance performance and efficiency.
The August 2025 Steam Hardware Survey illustrates the rationale behind this decision. Windows 11 64-bit currently dominates with a 60.39 percent market share, while Windows 10 64-bit follows with 35.08 percent. In contrast, older systems like Windows 7 64-bit are only at a low 0.07 percent. Given such a minimal number of 32-bit users left, Valve’s decision is a logical advancement.
While this modification may pose challenges for a very small group of players, it demonstrates the platform’s dedication to progressing with current technologies. For the larger user base, the transition ought to be smooth, but for those still reliant on outdated systems, the countdown to January 2026 has begun.
