Steam Machine owner reports the first "Red Line of Death" incident
Anyone who owned an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 probably remembers the dreaded Red Ring of Death (RROD) and Yellow Light of Death (YLOD), the infamous hardware failures that became synonymous with those consoles. While modern systems still have their own error indicators, few have reached the same level of notoriety.
Valve's new Steam Machine might not be headed down that road, but one early adopter has already encountered a rather ominous-looking error. Over on the /r/SteamMachine subreddit, one user reported that their brand-new console displayed what the community has jokingly dubbed the "Red Line of Death" after playing No Man's Sky and installing a firmware update.
According to the post, the Steam Machine began showing a solid red line across its front-mounted LED display before becoming completely unusable. At the time of writing, it's unclear whether the issue can be resolved through a software update or whether the hardware will need replacing. Hopefully, Steam Support will be able to either provide a fix or arrange a replacement if necessary.
Unlike traditional status LEDs, the Steam Machine's front light bar doubles as a diagnostic tool. During normal operation, it displays information such as download and update progress, but it can also show fault codes whenever the system encounters a boot issue.

Valve's support documentation lists several different patterns. A solid red bar indicates the system is overheating, while a blinking red segment in the fourth quadrant signals that no RAM has been detected. A blinking second quadrant points to a missing SSD, the left half flashing indicates memory training has failed, and a blinking right half signifies a GPU-related fault. It's a clever way of communicating hardware problems without relying on a tiny status screen, even if the bright red warning inevitably invites comparisons to Microsoft's infamous RROD.
Still, it's something worth keeping an eye on as more pre-order units reach customers over the coming weeks. After all, every new hardware launch has the occasional dud - it's only if reports start piling up that anyone should begin to worry. For Valve's sake, here's hoping the "Red Line of Death" remains more of a meme than a recurring feature.
The first report of a "Red Line of Death" error appearing on a Steam Machine has hit the web. Fortunately, there's just one report to speak of so far, so it's probably not an Xbox 360-scale disaster.
