Sony reveals a darker PS5 Digital Edition that’s exclusive to Japan

Sony unveils a stealthy Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition for Japan only

Sony has unveiled a new Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition, giving the console and its bundled DualSense controller an all-black matte finish. The new model launches on November 19, the same day as Grand Theft Auto VI, but there's a catch for fans elsewhere: for now, the console is exclusive to Japan.

The new edition builds on Sony's Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition, introduced last November at ¥55,000 (approximately $350 / €301 / £259). Designed to make the console more affordable in a market where Nintendo has traditionally dominated, this version comes with restrictions intended to prevent overseas exports. Buyers must use a Japanese PSN account and set the system language to Japanese.

Sony hasn't explained why it chose this particular moment to introduce the Midnight Black variant, although its launch date is certainly noteworthy given the anticipation surrounding Rockstar's upcoming open-world blockbuster. The console's regional restrictions also reflect Sony's efforts to keep affordable hardware available to local customers. Last year, CEO Hideaki Nishino said the company wanted Japanese buyers to have access to PS5 systems at fair prices rather than seeing stock diverted overseas because of favorable exchange rates.

The price difference is substantial. The standard PS5 Digital Edition currently costs $599.99 / €599.99 / £519.99, nearly twice the price of the Japan-exclusive model. Sony has raised prices during 2026 amid continued pressure from rising component costs, including memory.

Sony is also launching a matching Midnight Black external disc drive for ¥11,980 (around $76 / €65 / £56). Sold separately, the accessory allows the digital-only console to play physical games. However, buyers outside Japan currently have access only to the white version of the drive, making a completely black setup difficult to replicate elsewhere.

The Midnight Black color scheme for PS5 hardware first debuted with the original DualSense wireless controller and console covers shortly after the console's initial launch cycle, with Sony officially announced the expanded Midnight Black accessory collection on January 7, 2025

International customers aren't entirely out of luck. Sony sells Midnight Black PS5 console covers for $54.99 / €54.99 / £44.99, alongside a matching DualSense controller. Since the PS5's central section is already black, the covers bring the exterior closer to the Japanese edition's appearance. The only missing piece is the matching black disc drive.

For now, anyone seeking the complete Midnight Black PS5 setup will have to look to Japan, while everyone else can only approximate the look with separately sold accessories.
