The PlayStation 5 has already seen several price increases over its lifespan, but the US has largely avoided major hikes - until now. Sony has announced a new round of global price increases, and they’re quite significant.
The standard disc edition PS5 is rising to $650, while the PS5 Pro is jumping to a hefty $900. Even the PlayStation Portal remote player isn’t spared, with its price also going up.
Here’s how the new pricing compares:

Looking back, the PS5 originally launched in 2020 at $500 for the disc version and $400 for the digital model, while the PS5 Pro debuted in 2024 at $700. With these new adjustments, the base PS5 now matches the price of the Xbox Series X, which also saw an increase last year.

Sony attributes the changes to the “global economic landscape,” with factors like tariffs in the US playing a role. RAM is now also at a premium; shortages caused by generative AI companies have driven the prices sky high. The new pricing will take effect on April 2, 2026. For now, accessories appear unaffected, and Sony says updated pricing for several Southeast Asian markets will be announced later.
At the moment, the Nintendo Switch 2 remains cheaper at $449.99, though there are expectations that Nintendo could raise its prices in the future as well.
