ROG Xbox Ally gets tailored power profiles aimed at improving battery
Microsoft is introducing refined enhancements to the ROG Xbox Ally handheld devices. Newly announced and launched as Default Game Profiles (Preview), this feature automatically adjusts the hardware settings for compatible games while being played, optimizing battery duration and stabilizing frame rates.
Default Game Profiles are meticulously crafted for each game and are only effective when the device is powered by battery. The system implements tailored game profiles automatically, imposing limits on power and FPS. If a game's frame rate doesn't meet the expected FPS, the profiles can increase system power consumption to maintain stability, sacrificing some battery life in exchange for a smoother gaming experience.
Currently, this feature is available on ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handhelds, but it only supports 40 games at this time. This list includes first-party Microsoft titles such as Minecraft, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, Warzone, Doom Eternal, Doom: The Dark Ages, Forza Horizon 5, Gears of War Reloaded, Gears 5, Gears Tactics, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Sea of Thieves, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, among others.
To enable the new feature, users need to ensure they have the latest versions of Armoury Crate SE, the Xbox PC app, and Windows 11. To turn off Default Game Profiles, navigate to the Armoury Crate Command Center Game Bar widget, which will display the option with a toggle at the very top.
The company also provided an overview of upcoming features for its handheld devices. Next week, Game Save Sync will be introduced, indicating the last time the game's save files were synchronized across devices. Following that, enhancements such as "sleep and wake reliability, better formatting options for microSD cards," and "AI-driven features like Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) and highlight reels" are also in the pipeline for the hardware.
On the other hand, if you’re in search of a handheld device that is well-established, optimized for peak performance, and designed for serious gaming on the move, the ROG Ally X stands out as a top option. With its long battery life, improved ergonomics, and full Windows functionality, it embodies what future handheld gaming should aim to achieve.
