Sony PS5 Pro to gain a notable performance upgrade with PSSR 2.0 soon
The PlayStation 5 Pro, despite its market-leading power, has not achieved significant success since its November 2024 launch. Users felt its performance was underutilized, and features like the AI-powered PSSR upscaler were initially disappointing, often causing visual glitches instead of marked image quality improvements.
While the full potential of the PS5 Pro remains to be seen - for instance, with upcoming titles like Marvel's Wolverine - a significant system upgrade is reportedly coming by March. This update promises substantial improvements in image quality and performance, alongside some unexpected additions.
Reliable Japanese insider Gust_FAN, known for accurate leaks regarding the PS5 Slim and the Hyperpop Collection, recently shared new details about PSSR 2.0 on X, confirming its anticipated development. The insider revealed the launch window and specific enhancements, summarized as follows:
- The update is expected to be available between January and March.
- It will incorporate features similar to FSR 4 on the PS5 Pro.
- Users can expect better image quality and overall performance.
- Games that previously ran around 70-80 FPS are set to see increased frame rates.
- Older, low-resolution games will be playable at higher resolutions.
- New debugging tools will be provided for game developers.

Although much of this information was previously rumored, the confirmation of the launch window suggests that players won't have to wait long to see the frame rate improvements and determine if PSSR 2.0 can truly push the console toward being a consistent 4K resolution, 120 FPS machine.
The planned boost for classic low-resolution games is particularly compelling, as it could make the PlayStation Store's back catalog and the more expensive PlayStation Plus subscriptions more appealing to consumers.
For now, the standard PlayStation 5 remains the premier choice for experiencing Sony's latest exclusives, stunning graphics, and rapid load times. As always, for the latest news on hardware launches and industry developments, be sure to follow our dedicated hardware coverage.
