PlatinumGames unveils its plans for 2020
Founded in 2007 by two former Capcom names, Tatsuya Minami and Atsushi Inaba, PlatiniumGames has brought to the world of video games a number of titles that have become cult since its creation. We owe them Bayonetta, Vanquish, or more recently Nier: Automata and Astral Chain.
However, the studio had a few difficult hours with the cancellation of Scalebound in 2017 and its withdrawal from the development of Granblue Fantasy: Relink, which is now fully developed by Cygames.
But PlatinumGames has other projects in the works. Even if the studio is rather stingy with information on the subject, Bayonetta 3 is one of these projects. It was announced at the Games Awards 2017, and its development is in progress. Another project in the works is Babylon’s Fall, which was announced during E3 2018, and which we recently heard about during the last State of Play.
But that doesn't seem to be all. Indeed, Kenichi Sato, president of PlatinumGames recently spoke about the studio's plans for 2020, to the Japanese media Inside Games. He declared that 2020 would be an important year for the studio, which, given the visibility brought by the Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan, wishes to "surpass itself".
Last year, we said that 2019 would be a year where the curtain rises for a new stage for PlatinumGames. We’re a bit late on that, but I believe we’ll have several big announcements to deliver early in the new year, so please look forward to that. That’s a promise I’ll definitely keep.
Kenichi Sato promises us new announcements early this year. We naturally think of Bayonetta 3 and Babylon’s Fall, but it could also be something entirely different since PlatinumGames revealed last May that it's working on two new licenses. We'll have to wait a little longer to find out which are the upcoming games but 2020 already looks very promising for the fans of the studio.
