Neural Texture Compression could be a DLSS-level breakthrough for VRAM

Nvidia’s latest game-changing tech could reduce VRAM needs by up to 85%

Neural rendering is gradually emerging in the gaming industry, with new AI-driven techniques aiming to enhance visual quality and push the limits of traditional rendering on modern GPUs and next-generation consoles. At NVIDIA’s GTC 2026 event, a detailed presentation titled “Introduction to Neural Rendering” highlighted several advancements, with Neural Texture Compression (NTC) standing out as a potentially transformative feature for PC gaming.

As implied by its name, Neural Texture Compression offers a different approach to handling textures compared to current methods. Most games today rely on BCn (block) compression, which divides textures into smaller chunks that the GPU compresses and decompresses as needed.

NTC, however, takes a different route by encoding the underlying features of a texture into a compact representation. A neural network (such as the Tensor Cores found in NVIDIA RTX GPUs) then reconstructs the texture in real time. NVIDIA emphasizes that this process is deterministic rather than generative, meaning the AI consistently rebuilds the same texture instead of creating new variations.

This method enables significantly higher compression rates than traditional techniques, greatly reducing VRAM usage. In one example shown by NVIDIA, a Tuscan villa scene that required 6.5GB of VRAM using BCn compression dropped to just 970MB with NTC - an impressive reduction of around 85% - while maintaining similar or even improved visual quality.

Another advantage is smaller game install sizes and updates, since large, high-resolution textures no longer need to be stored in full. At a time when increasing graphical fidelity demands more memory, this technology could be especially beneficial for players using GPUs with 6GB to 12GB of VRAM.
