Nvidia GTX Pascal GPUs get unofficial Windows XP support from modders
Windows XP is long past its prime, but modders continue to find new ways to keep the aging operating system relevant. The latest effort brings Nvidia Pascal graphics cards, including the powerful Titan Xp, to an OS that officially stopped supporting newer GPUs years ago.
Modder SupraGSX has released an unofficial Nvidia driver called ForceWare 382.69, which is based on Nvidia's GeForce 368.69 driver and has been modified to work with 32-bit versions of Windows XP. The biggest addition is support for Nvidia's Pascal-based GeForce GTX 10 series, extending the operating system's graphics capabilities well beyond what Nvidia officially allowed.
Nvidia ended official Windows XP support with its Maxwell generation, meaning users were limited to older GeForce GTX 900-series hardware. ForceWare 382.69 changes that by allowing Pascal cards such as the GTX 1080 Ti, as well as the Titan X and Titan Xp, to function under Windows XP. The latter was Nvidia's flagship Pascal gaming GPU, making the prospect of pairing it with Microsoft's nearly two-decade-old OS particularly unusual.
The modified driver also brings support for newer display standards, including DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 and HDMI 2.0. Some users have already reported successfully running modern high-refresh-rate monitors, including one test using a 3840 x 1080 display at 144Hz.

According to the driver's release notes, both Direct3D 9 and OpenGL are supported, with the GTX 1080 Ti used for testing. That could give enthusiasts running Windows XP for older PC games a substantial performance boost compared with the Maxwell-era GPUs officially supported by Nvidia.
However, ForceWare 382.69 comes with plenty of caveats. It is an unofficial project and has reportedly been "vibe-coded" with the help of AI coding tools. Users have reported inconsistent results, including problems with OpenGL, PhysX, and other functionality, so compatibility and stability are far from guaranteed.
The driver is available through GitHub, where its source code can also be examined, but installing it remains a risky proposition. Unofficial drivers can behave unpredictably, and there is little reason to expose valuable hardware to those risks unless you're experimenting with retro hardware.
Windows XP itself is also unsuitable for modern internet use and lacks support for contemporary software. Still, seeing a Titan Xp running on Microsoft's legendary old OS is exactly the kind of bizarre hardware experiment that makes PC modding so entertaining.
