NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070: New GDDR6 model launching this month with notable VRAM changes
The arrival of a new version of the RTX 4070 from Nvidia, with slightly slower video memory, seems to be confirmed by the development of such a variant by a graphics card maker.
Nvidia's switch from GDDR6X to GDDR6 is primarily due to a shortage of GDDR6X memory supply. By introducing the new RTX 4070 model with GDDR6 memory, Nvidia can allocate its GDDR6X supply to higher-end graphics cards.
According to reports, the specifications of the new RTX 4070 remain the same as the current model, except for one slight change - it will utilize slower GDDR6 memory rated at 20Gbps instead of 21Gbps used in GDDR6X-powered models, making it 5% slower. Fortunately, Nvidia's RTX 4070 is not known to be heavily restricted by bandwidth. Additionally, the Galax RTX 4070 OC 2X is expected to feature a different AD104 chip (the AD104-251 instead of AD104-250), but all other specifications, including core count, will remain unchanged from the original RTX 4070.

If this information is accurate, it is likely that other models utilizing the AD104-251 chip and GDDR6 VRAM from different card makers will also enter the market. However, as VideoCardz points out, it is important to note that these variations may not be clearly indicated on the packaging, making it difficult to distinguish between the AD104-251 spin and the original RTX 4070 models without careful examination of the specifications.
Overall, this is not a significant cause for concern, and as a result, the price of the new RTX 4070 is unlikely to be reduced. Nonetheless, it is possible that Nvidia and its partners may consider reducing the price of the RTX 4070, which would certainly be well-received.
