Microsoft increases gaming prices globally

Get ready to pay more to enjoy your favourite games, at least on Microsoft's platforms. The company has announced an unexpected price increase for Xbox consoles worldwide. The price increase varies depending on which console we are talking about but overall you will have to pay more for your favourite console whether it's an Xbox Series X or an Xbox Series S. You can check out the list below to see how much you will pay for your new Microsoft gaming platform if you are buying them the UK, Europe or the US:

  • Xbox Series X > £499.99 / €599.99 / $599.99 with an increase of £20 / €50 / $100.
  • Xbox Series S (512GB) > £299.99 / €349.99 / $379.99 with an increase of £50 / €50 / $80.
  • Xbox Series X (2TB) > £589.99 / €699.99 / $729.99 with an increase of £40 / €50 / $130

And you thought PS5 Pro was expensive...

The announcement is far from surprising given the current economic instability worldwide. However, the tariff war is probably not the only factor behind this price increase. Microsoft has directly pointed at market conditions as the cause for an increase that is also hitting video games and even controllers. The controversy generated by the launch price of the PlayStation 5 Pro and the Nintendo Switch 2 has faded soon enough and everyone seems to have accepted that Mario Kart World will cost more than any other standard game released to date. Pre-orders are piling up and gamers seem to have swallowed such a hard pill without even blinking. It's no wonder that Microsoft has increased the price of video games too, and we will soon see the average game at $80. A Microsoft spokesperson has left it very clear:

"As of 1st May, we have adjusted recommended retailer pricing for our consoles and controllers worldwide. We also expect to adjust the pricing of some of our new, first-party games starting this holiday season to $79.99. Those titles purchased on the Xbox store have the benefit of Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing players to buy once and play on console and PC at no additional cost."

Given the current ascending trend of gaming prices, Sony is likely to make a move in the close future, especially with Grand Theft Auto VI as a wild card. Fortunately, not everything is lost.
