Frictional steps on the brakes for Amnesia games
There are some studios that have a knack for a specific video game genre. You could say that Frictional Games, for example, is specialized in making immersive horror games, and you wouldn't be far from the truth. The studio has demonstrated its skill by releasing quite a few iconic games in the genre, like all of the Amnesia series, which is ultimately represented by its latest installment, Amnesia: The Bunker.
Exploring a new path
Frictional Games has much more to offer to the players as revealed by creative director Thomas Grip in a recent interview.
"For future projects, I think we will cut back a bit on the horror aspects in order to give greater focus on other emotional qualities. I am confident that these games will still feel like Frictional ones. The immersion, the personal journey, and a holistic vision are what I see as defining traits of a Frictional game – not just horror as such."
The studio wants to take a break from releasing horror games, which means that we will have to wait until we see a new Amnesia game. Amnesia: Rebirth and Amnesia: The Bunker have left the fans of psychological horror with a good aftertaste and wanting new experiences, but Frictional Games is more interested in generating other emotions with its future titles, at least for a while.
A deeper level of immersion will still be the main trait of whatever project the studio is working on next. Frictional has always tackled complex and interesting themes in its games, but it has always worked on them from a horror perspective. Not trying to make things as scary as possible will be a major change, but it's quite sure that the new stories will still be unforgettable experiences, just in a different way.
"We want to give the player some sort of immersive fantasy. Be that being a WW1 soldier trapped in a bunker or a robot stuck at the bottom of the ocean. We want to shape the game in such a way that story, gameplay, sound, art, etc, all work together to strengthen that core goal experience. It is also important to make sure this journey feels personal and that evoking emotions is the main goal."
Until the studio surprises us with its new project, all the fans of immersive experiences should give any of its games a try. Titles like SOMA, Penumbra Collection, or Amnesia: The Bunker are very good examples of what the guys at Frictional can do. Be warned that these are all deep horror experiences that can be counted among the best ones in the genre and you can find your Amnesia: The Bunker PC key at the best price with our comparator alongside the best deals for all the games from the studio.
