Fan-made Companion Cube case lets Steam Machine users customize their PC

Just weeks after dbrand confirmed it had to cancel its Steam Machine Companion Cube case after failing to secure permission to use Valve's intellectual property, the community has stepped in with its own solution. A 3D printing enthusiast has created an unofficial Portal-inspired Companion Cube case that anyone with a compatible printer can make at home.

Created by Printables user Jaron, the Steam Machine Companion Cube Case is a free fan project designed specifically for Valve's Steam Machine. According to a post on X, the model was built entirely from scratch over the course of three weeks, using only publicly available images of dbrand's canceled design as reference.

The timing is certainly interesting. While dbrand's version was an unlicensed commercial product that ultimately couldn't move forward because it relied on Valve's intellectual property, Jaron's design is distributed free of charge and is explicitly not licensed for commercial use. Whether that difference is enough to keep lawyers away remains to be seen, though it certainly puts the project in a very different category.

The case has also been designed with practicality in mind. It doesn't obstruct any of the Steam Machine's existing ventilation, while the familiar Aperture Science logo on the front doubles as an additional air intake to help improve airflow to the system.

Jaron has published detailed printing and assembly instructions alongside the files, making the project accessible even to users with single-extruder 3D printers. Everything required to build the case is available through Printables, allowing Steam Machine owners to recreate the iconic Companion Cube aesthetic without waiting for an official accessory that now seems unlikely to ever exist.

If you've already picked up Valve's Steam Machine and were disappointed by the cancellation of dbrand's case, this fan-made alternative could be the next best thing. Just keep in mind that, as Jaron notes, the project is not affiliated with Valve or Steam and doesn't include any official game assets - it's simply a community-made tribute inspired by one of gaming's most recognizable cubes.

But it's beautiful, and it's also Steam-themed since it's a Valve game. For anyone with a 3D printer, this project is a must-print.

The visual result is impressive. It almost looks like an official accessory, so reminiscent of the Portal universe is the design. With good LED lighting, the Steam Machine can become a real decorative object in a living room. This type of case seems much more original to me than classic skins.

This project is fantastic for Portal and modding enthusiasts. The Companion Cube instantly gives the Steam Machine real personality, whereas many mini-PCs all look the same. The fact that the files are free and 3D printable makes the initiative even more appealing. It's exactly the kind of community creation that makes you want to take an interest in Valve's console.

I love the nod to Portal, but at the same time, it's a shame that these things tend to be so expensive or limited. As a concept, it's top-notch; as a product, it'll probably be for a select few.

I think it's a brilliant idea, very Valve-esque. If the Steam Machine is already a cube, dressing it up as a Companion Cube is practically a must for any Portal fan.

The idea of being able to customize the Steam Machine so much is the best thing about the product, in my opinion. If Valve allows for more freedom and the community gets creative, some really crazy things are going to come out of it.

If it doesn't block the ventilation or ports, then it's perfect. There are some nice-looking accessories that ruin the device, and here it seems like they've actually considered that.

Turning a canceled commercial accessory into a free 3D printable project is a great move by the community. Designing the front logo to act as an extra air intake shows real thought went into the cooling side. Making the files fit single-extruder printers means a lot more people can actually try printing it at home.

It's good that at least it can be customized with something related to the company.
