Everquest turns 20 years old!
If you have been playing videogames for a while, you may have heard of Everquest, one of the pioneers in the MMORPG genre. The original game launched on March 19, 1999, and it attracted a huge number of players back in the time, becoming the most popular MMORPG and maintaining leadership for a few years while sharing the stage with other titles. It stayed like that pretty much until World of Warcraft was released.
Everquest has received a lot of expansions over the years, enhancing its original content with more races to play, more lands to discover, more enemies to fight, and more adventures to experience. But the people responsible for keeping alive this game through the last twenty years are the players. When Everquest was launched, the type of gameplay it featured promoted grouping and the formation of guilds. The game forced players to come together in order achieve things, and back in 1999 achieving something in Everquest implied effort, dedication, and a lot of gameplay time. In the end, that led to the creation of very strong bonds between players. That´s what has ultimately led to an old game with outdated gameplay mechanics and graphics, that has suffered quite a few updates over the years, some of them not so good, to be still alive and kicking twenty years later. In fact, most of the recent updates in the game have added different TLP (Time Locked Progression) servers, where players start to play Everquest again from scratch hoping to relive their past experiences with old friends. The main reason Everquest is still alive is the thing it did best when it started, and it´s creating relations between players. Some of those guilds created back then have even continued together after moving to other MMORPG.
To celebrate its 20th Anniversary, players will be able to join several in-game events during the following weeks. Also, two new TLP servers are have just been launched, so if you want to meet some old friends or experience this old fashioned game that has kept some people hooked for such a long time, it could be a good opportunity for you. Happy anniversary, Everquest!
