Control developer Remedy jumps into the free-to-play arena

Remedy's excellent job as a developer in games like Control has gained the studio quite a bit of renown. Their career started with Death Rally in 1996, but their first big hit arrived in 2001 with Max Payne. The shooter rapidly became a cult game thanks to its frenetic action, and a couple of years later, its sequel Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne continued to make the series popular. But the true success of the studio came in 2010 with Alan Wake, a horror adventure that set the foundations of Remedy's work in the years to come. Quantum Break, Alan Wake's American Nightmare, and finally, Control in 2019 contributed to making Remedy even bigger. Now, there are quite a few players eager to know about the studio's upcoming projects, and they seem to be happy to oblige.

Project "Vanguard"

In a recent announcement, Remedy Entertainment has revealed that they are partnering with the giant Tencent to launch a new game codenamed "Vanguard." The new game will be a free-to-play cooperative multiplayer shooter focused on PvE battles. It's developed with the Unreal Engine, and it will be available on PC and consoles. Vanguard is expected to have a heavy narrative side, and even though it's too early to reveal details about the game, the CEO of Remedy Entertainment, Tero Virtala, has talked about it in the official announcement.

"Vanguard marks Remedy's first entry into Games-as-a-Service business model, executed by our top tier team of free-to-play experts. We are building something new and exciting for co-operative multiplayer space, on top of Remedy's strengths. Expanding our capabilities to take on publishing responsibilities is the next step in the development of our company. We are excited for this long-term partnership with Tencent and with confidence can say that it is an excellent fit in supporting Vanguard's ambitious plans. Vanguard is a global opportunity, and Tencent can support Remedy internationally, and lead the operations in Asia and the mobile markets."

Therefore, Remedy is aiming quite high with its new project: a new business model, multiplayer, and Tencent's license for a mobile version.

Hopefully, we should know more details about Vanguard in the future, including the game's setting and its final name. Considering Remedy's previous experience, it could be quite a big hit. Still, the current number of free-to-play multiplayer shooters available is quite high, so they better be hiding some aces in the sleeve to make the game shine above others.

Meanwhile, you can still focus on the deep narrative and great action of other games from the studio, especially Control, which you can find at the best price on our comparator.
