Commodore 77 turns the C64 Ultimate into a Cyberpunk-inspired retro PC

Commodore and CD Projekt Red are teaming up for a retro-tech crossover that feels almost tailor-made for the world of Cyberpunk 2077. The result is the Commodore 77, a special-edition Commodore 64 Ultimate designed to look like it was pulled straight out of Night City.

The machine takes the familiar yellow "breadbox" design of the classic C64 and gives it a suitably dystopian makeover. The case features worn surfaces, graffiti, partially removed stickers, and a metal plate across the function-key row. Even the startup screen has received a Cyberpunk 2077-themed redesign. Aside from the Commodore branding on the front, it could easily pass for a piece of fictional hardware from Night City.

There's more to the collaboration than just the aesthetics, too. The Commodore 77 comes with a special demo containing a Cyberpunk 2077 "experience" designed to expand the game's universe and lore. Polish C64 group Arise created the demo, while chiptune artist LukHash handled its soundtrack. The software comes on an Arasaka-themed cartridge, adding another suitably Cyberpunk touch to the package.

Buyers also get a custom neon power indicator, themed stickers and pins, collectible packaging, and a Cyberpunk-themed spiral-bound manual.

For anyone unfamiliar with the modern Commodore, the company was revived by YouTuber Christian "Perifractic" Simpson, with the Commodore 64 Ultimate serving as its first major product. Rather than simply recreating the C64 through software, the system uses an FPGA to reproduce the original hardware architecture while retaining a physical keyboard and adding modern conveniences such as HDMI, USB, and Wi-Fi. It also supports original C64 accessories. The Commodore 64 Ultimate is available in the classic beige breadbox design or the later C64C-style case, with the hardware built using original injection-molding tooling.

Underneath its retro exterior, the Commodore 77 gets a considerable performance upgrade over the 1980s original. Its AMD Artix 7 XC7A100T FPGA runs at 77MHz, compared with the original Commodore 64's 1MHz processor. Like the standard Commodore 64 Ultimate, the system is designed to remain compatible with around 99% of the roughly 10,000 original C64 games and applications.

The special edition also adds a Cyberpunk 2077-themed BASIC 2.0 startup screen and custom menu colors, completing the crossover. The Commodore 77 is available to pre-order for $377 (around €340 EUR and £290 GBP), with shipments expected to begin in early 2027.
