AMD’s Next-Gen UDNA GPUs Promise Major Performance Boosts

According to the leaker KeplerL2, AMD is set to achieve substantial improvements in per-CU (Compute Unit) performance with its upcoming UDNA GPU architecture. The leaker predicts a doubling of both AI and Raster performance, along with a gain of around 20% in raster performance.

With UDNA, AMD is further investing in AI and ray tracing technologies. The recently launched RDNA 4 GPUs from AMD already showcase significant enhancements in ray tracing and AI capabilities, and AMD intends to pursue this path with UDNA.

AMD's upcoming UDNA graphics architecture will be utilized in the next generation of consoles from Microsoft and Sony. The current Xbox and PlayStation consoles utilize AMD's RDNA 2 graphics architecture. Transitioning to UDNA will provide Microsoft and Sony with three generations worth of architectural advancements to create a "next-generation" console experience. In clarifications to commenters, KeplerL2 indicated that the claim of a 2x increase in ray tracing performance does not imply that the performance of games with ray tracing will be doubled. Instead, AMD's enhancement in ray tracing performance will reduce the frametimes of the ray tracing segments in a game. Essentially, this modification aims to significantly decrease the performance hit when ray tracing effects are enabled.

In a similar vein, the improvements made in AI performance by AMD will minimize the performance burden of AI-related features in games. An example would be a reduced performance overhead for AMD's FSR 4 AI upscaler, enhancing its efficiency.

AMD is concentrating on delivering the necessary ray tracing and AI capabilities to facilitate next-generation gaming experiences. However, AMD is also committed to not neglecting raster performance with UDNA. Once more, AMD plans to enhance the per-CU performance of its graphics architecture.
