ASUS WRX90 motherboard manual suggests the possibility of 3D V-Cache support for Threadripper CPUs

According to information about ASUS’ Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE motherboard, AMD might be planning to introduce their 3D V-Cache technology to their Ryzen Threadripper CPU series. This advancement could be significant for AMD’s workstation CPU offerings, as many types of workloads would benefit from increased cache.

While AMD’s Ryzen X3D processors often promote 3D V-Cache as a gaming-related enhancement, this technology has applications beyond gaming. In 2021, AMD launched their initial V-Cache equipped EPYC CPUs, Milan-X, which boasted performance improvements of 50% in specific technical computing tasks. Recently, Cloudflare revealed that Genoa-X (Zen 4 EPYC featuring V-Cache) will be utilized in their 12th Gen cloud servers.

Evidently, AMD’s X3D/V-Cache technology proves advantageous in scenarios other than gaming. Given this perspective, it seems logical for AMD to develop V-Cache enhanced Threadripper CPUs.

ASUS’ documentation for the Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE motherboard mentions an X3D/V-Cache override, implying that V-Cache is on the way for Threadripper. After all, the requirement for an override raises questions if V-Cache was not intended for Threadripper. With their Ryzen 7 9800X3D, AMD has affirmed that the latest V-Cache processors operate at higher frequencies and cooler temperatures compared to previous generations. Therefore, this seems to be an opportune moment to adapt AMD’s X3D technology for Threadripper.

Zen 5-based Threadripper X3D could potentially yield significant performance improvements for numerous technical computing applications. This would render these upcoming processors essential upgrades for various businesses. This situation is beneficial for AMD, as Threadripper constitutes a high-margin segment. Additionally, this strategy would assist AMD in capturing more market share from Intel.
