ASUS marks 20 years of ROG with retro Crosshair 2006 X870E motherboard
ASUS ROG has officially revealed the limited-edition ROG Crosshair 2006 motherboard, a special release celebrating the brand’s first-ever motherboard from 20 years ago. While the new board embraces retro-inspired styling, it also packs many of ASUS’ latest high-end motherboard technologies and enthusiast features.
The ROG Crosshair 2006 takes visual inspiration from the original 2006-era Crosshair motherboard, blending classic design elements with modern hardware capabilities. One of its standout additions is a 2-inch OLED display positioned on the primary M.2 slot heatsink. This screen can show live system information such as CPU clock speeds, temperatures, and fan speeds, while also allowing users to upload custom images or animations for personalization.
Underneath the retro-inspired exterior, the motherboard is heavily based on ASUS’ current ROG Crosshair X870E Dark Hero platform. It includes the same premium 20(110A)+2(110A)+2 power stage design alongside ProCool II power connectors, MicroFine alloy chokes, and 10K black metallic capacitors aimed at supporting high-end Ryzen processors and heavy overclocking workloads.
Instead of the large modern VRM shrouds commonly seen on flagship motherboards, ASUS opted for exposed copper finned heatsinks integrated into the rear I/O cover, helping reinforce the nostalgic aesthetic while still delivering strong thermal performance. The motherboard also includes several advanced memory technologies designed for high-speed DDR5 kits. These features include server-grade ultra low-etch PCB manufacturing, PCB back drilling, and ASUS NitroPath DRAM Technology to improve signal integrity and memory stability.
Expansion options are equally high-end. The board includes two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots alongside five M.2 storage slots, two of which support PCIe 5.0 SSDs. ASUS has also included its latest convenience features such as M.2 Q-Latch, Q-Release, and Q-Slide for easier SSD installation.
Connectivity is another major focus. The motherboard supports WiFi 7, dual 10G and 5G Ethernet networking, USB4 connectivity, and a front USB Type-C header capable of Quick Charge 4+ with up to 60W power delivery. ASUS also bundled its AIO Q-Connector system, allowing compatible liquid coolers to connect cleanly without visible wiring between the motherboard and pump.
To complete the throwback theme, ASUS ships the ROG Crosshair 2006 in retro-inspired packaging designed to resemble classic motherboard boxes from the mid-2000s, further emphasizing the celebration of ROG’s 20-year history.
