AMD’s pricey Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 shifts focus from gamers to creators
AMD has officially revealed the pricing for its highly anticipated dual-cache X3D processor. The new Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 will launch at $899, as confirmed by AMD’s David McAfee, VP and GM of Ryzen CPU and Radeon Graphics, with availability starting April 22.
Compared to the standard Ryzen 9 9950X3D, which launched at $699, this new chip carries a $200 premium. That added cost comes from its unique design, as it’s the first AMD processor to feature 3D V-Cache on both eight-core CCDs instead of just one.
Interestingly, AMD is not marketing this CPU primarily for gaming. While X3D chips are often associated with high frame rates, the 9950X3D2 is aimed more at professionals, including developers and content creators working with demanding workloads and large datasets.
This positioning is reflected in AMD’s current benchmarks, which focus on productivity tasks like rendering, AI processing, and content creation. Gaming performance figures haven’t been shared yet. Although it should still perform well in games, there’s no clear indication that it will significantly outperform existing X3D models in that area.

The processor itself features 16 Zen 5 cores, 32 threads, boost speeds up to 5.6 GHz, and a massive 192 MB of L3 cache - 208 MB total when including L2 cache. It also comes with a 200W TDP and supports DDR5 memory, PCIe 5.0, and the AM5 platform. Given the price difference, it may be difficult for some users to justify the extra $200 without clear performance gains, especially for gaming.
For gamers building a PC today, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D continues to be an outstanding option, offering excellent frame rates and impressive efficiency. It’s a proven X3D performer that pairs exceptionally well with high-end GPUs.
