AMD plans to bring FSR 4 to gaming handhelds and laptops by late 2026
AMD is preparing a new, lightweight version of its FSR 4 upscaling technology for APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld gaming PCs, with a release planned for this year. According to The Elec, Jack Huynh, AMD's Senior Vice President and General Manager of its Computing and Graphics Group, confirmed the upcoming variant, potentially bringing machine-learning-based upscaling to a much wider range of devices.
Details remain scarce, however, as AMD has yet to explain how this version will differ from its existing FSR 4 and FSR 4.1 implementations. Huynh described the upcoming technology as a lightweight model designed for APUs, suggesting that it will prioritize efficiency, image stability, and low latency rather than demanding the same computing resources as the desktop implementation. It remains unclear whether the approach will resemble Sony's QSSR upscaler for the PS5 or AMD's planned FSR 4.1 support for older Radeon graphics architectures.
One of the biggest challenges is hardware compatibility. AMD's Radeon 8060S and 8050S integrated GPUs, found in its notebook and handheld platforms, use the RDNA 3.5 architecture, which lacks support for the data types used by the existing FSR 4 implementation. Mobile devices also operate under tighter power and memory bandwidth constraints than desktop graphics cards, making a more efficient approach necessary.
If successful, the new upscaler could benefit a broad range of AMD-powered devices. Gaming handhelds such as the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and potentially Valve's Steam Deck could gain improved image quality without sacrificing as much performance. Laptops powered by AMD APUs, including high-end Strix Halo systems, could also benefit from the technology.

For handhelds using processors such as the Ryzen Z2, official FSR 4 support could be particularly valuable. Better upscaling could deliver sharper visuals at lower internal rendering resolutions, potentially improving frame rates while reducing power consumption. That could help extend battery life, an important consideration for portable gaming systems.
Currently, AMD's machine-learning-based FSR 4.1 upscaling is available on supported Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000 discrete graphics cards, while older architectures rely on FSR 3. Official ML-based FSR support for Radeon RX 6000 GPUs is reportedly planned for 2027.
A lighter FSR 4 implementation could therefore fill an important gap in AMD's software lineup. If it delivers meaningful image-quality improvements while fitting within the power and performance limits of APUs, the technology could become a major advantage for future gaming handhelds and laptops. The extent of those gains will depend on the final implementation and which devices AMD ultimately supports.
