Xbox launches new Handheld Compatibility Program for ROG Ally
Microsoft has officially announced the release date for its Xbox handheld devices, the ROG Ally and ROG Ally X, which were initially introduced in June 2025. The two devices are set to launch on October 16, 2025, in collaboration with ASUS. Although the precise pricing for both consoles has yet to be disclosed, Microsoft has shared additional information, including a new compatibility initiative aimed at helping players determine if their desired games can run on each device.
This new program resembles Valve's Steam Deck Verified and is intended to inform gamers whether they can effectively play a game they own on supported devices, using two distinct badges for any compatible titles:
- Handheld Optimized: This badge signifies that games are fully prepared for use—featuring default controller inputs, an intuitive text entry method, accurate iconography, clear text visibility, and the proper resolution in full-screen mode—allowing you to focus more on gameplay rather than adjusting settings.
- Mostly Compatible: This indicates that certain games may need minor adjustments in-game to provide the best experience on a handheld device.
Additionally, games will showcase a Windows Performance Fit indicator reflecting the anticipated performance on the supported device. If a game is marked as both “Handheld Optimized” and has a Windows Performance Fit badge of “Should play great” or “Should play well,” it indicates compatibility and performance suitability—offering you extra confidence before diving in.
The company has collaborated with game developers to assess, enhance, and authenticate thousands of games for compatibility with handheld devices, with plans to expand the program with more titles over time. For further details on the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X, you can refer to the announcement post.
On the other hand, if you're in search of a handheld that has already been tested, optimized for top-tier performance, and crafted for serious gaming on the move, the ROG Ally X clearly emerges as a top choice for the time being. With extended battery life, enhanced ergonomics, and complete Windows functionality, it represents the pinnacle of what handheld gaming should strive for.
