Switch 2 can transform Joy-Con into a computer mouse?
Rumors suggesting that the Nintendo Switch 2 will enable players to utilize the Joy-Con controllers as computer mice have been seemingly confirmed by two newly published patents. These patents, submitted in Japan in August 2023, feature comprehensive diagrams of the Switch 2 and Joy-Con, including illustrations depicting the Joy-Con being used as an unconventional input device—lying face-down on a surface with fingers resting on the buttons.
The patent documentation also notes the incorporation of light sensors on the inner side of the Joy-Con, akin to the functioning of modern optical mice. Importantly, some illustrations show users employing two Joy-Cons at once as distinct mice or combining a standard Joy-Con with a mouse-like variant. This inventive control capability could lead to fresh gameplay experiences for strategy games, MOBA genres, and creative titles that showcase Nintendo's hallmark innovation.

Additional Details from the Patent Indicate:
- Magnetic Connection: The Joy-Con will connect to the Switch 2 through magnets instead of the current sliding mechanism.
- Standalone Charging Dock: The Switch 2 may include a dedicated charging dock for the Joy-Con, enabling wireless charging.
These patent revelations have further heightened anticipation among fans, who eagerly await the Nintendo Direct event on April 2, when Nintendo is expected to officially announce details about the Switch 2. While a deleted Reddit account had shared a post predicting the launch date for the Nintendo Switch 2 as May 22, we’ll focus on what lies just ahead of us.
The upcoming event will officially disclose more technical specifications about the home console that doubles as a hybrid handheld device and is larger than its predecessor. We are looking forward to the sequel for additional clarity regarding the ‘C Button’ functionality, USB-C ports, and the Joy-Con serving as a mouse input. It’s also anticipated that the pricing and availability of this competitor to the Steam Deck will be revealed at the forthcoming event.
