Seagate breaks records with massive 36 TB HDD
The race for hard drive capacity is heating up as Seagate has shattered the record for the world's largest HDD with its new 36 TB Exos M model. The company has also revealed plans to launch a 60 TB hard drive in the near future.
Just one month after introducing a 32 TB hard drive, Seagate has once again impressed the industry with the Exos M 36 TB, which is now the largest-capacity HDD on the market. This new drive is specifically designed for data centers, catering to major clients like Microsoft and AWS.
What’s remarkable is that Seagate achieved this massive capacity using Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology combined with the Mozaic 3+ platform. This enables a storage density of up to 3.6 TB per platter. The company is also confident that it will soon reach 10 TB per platter, paving the way for 100 TB hard drives in the future.
In addition, Seagate CEO Dave Mosley disclosed that the company has successfully tested a density of 6 TB per platter in the lab, which means a 60 TB hard drive could become a reality very soon.
Seagate highlighted that HAMR technology helps reduce costs by 25% and power consumption by 60% per TB, ensuring that HDDs remain competitive in terms of cost compared to SSDs, even though SSDs currently dominate in performance and storage density.
For now, the 36 TB hard drive is primarily aimed at enterprise use and is not planned for retail sale. However, with these groundbreaking advancements, Seagate is solidifying its position as a leader in data storage, promising efficient and cost-effective storage solutions for users.
