Samsung unveils groundbreaking 24Gb GDDR7 memory modules with speeds over 40 Gbps for next gen GPUs
In a recent statement, Samsung has revealed that it has created the first 24 Gb GDDR7 DRAM in the industry, utilizing its 5th Generation 10nm process technology. This new technology delivers a cell density increase of up to 50% while keeping the same package size as its predecessor, GDDR6.
With speeds reaching 40Gbps, these new modules offer substantial memory bandwidth. To put this into perspective, Nvidia’s RTX 4090 utilizes 21Gbps GDDR6X memory. By launching these GDDR7 modules, Samsung provides 50% greater memory capacity and 90% higher memory bandwidth than the GDDR6X memory in the RTX 4090.
With 24 Gb DRAM, GPUs will have access to 3 GB of memory compared to the 2 GB provided by the 16 Gb DRAM. This enhancement will result in a significant increase in memory capacities. A 128-bit GPU can scale up to 12 GB of VRAM, while a 256-bit GPU can reach 24 GB of VRAM, a 384-bit GPU can achieve 36 GB of VRAM, and a 512-bit GPU can go up to 48 GB of VRAM.

Currently, lower-end GPUs contain minimal VRAM. GPUs with 8GB of VRAM are common in the lower segment of the GPU market, even though many modern games can easily require more. With 3GB VRAM modules, 8GB GPUs with 128-bit memory buses could transition into 12GB GPUs with the same memory buses. Coupled with the memory speed advancements of GDDR7, lower-end GPUs could be launched with increased VRAM and a significant bandwidth improvement.
For high-end GPUs, this could enable larger frame buffers on mid-range models and enormous frame buffers on high-end gaming, AI, and workstation GPUs. Samsung has announced that AI/GPU partners are currently validating their new 24Gb GDDR7 memory modules. Samsung aims to begin commercial production of these memory modules in early 2025.
