AMD Fluid Motion Frames 3 surfaces in new Radeon driver update

Radeon software update reveals AMD's Fluid Motion Frames 3 frame-gen tech

Members of the Guru3D Forums (via @harukaze5719) have identified mentions of “AFMF 3” and “FrameGenV3” in the drivers from AMD. This indicates that AMD is preparing to launch a third-generation version of its driver-level frame generation technology called Fluid Motion Frames. The development of AMD Fluid Motion Frames 3 is underway!

AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) is the firm’s frame generation technology that operates at the driver level, allowing for frame creation to enhance performance and smoothness in a vast array of games. As part of the Radeon Adrenaline Software's HYPR-RX suite, AFMF 2 was released last year, bringing enhancements in latency, image quality, and overall stability.

This technology complements AMD Radeon Anti-Lag or Radeon Anti-Lag 2, aimed at minimizing latency, with AMD promoting it as an effective method for improving performance on mobile devices with less powerful integrated Radeon graphics. AMD has persistently refined this technology, with AFMF 2.1 being launched earlier this year and receiving largely favorable reviews for its further advancements in latency and image quality, particularly through reduced ghosting.

These capabilities enable players of DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Vulkan, and OpenGL games to leverage Frame Generation even without specific game support. The second version of the technology improved latency, enhanced performance, and offered a wider range of settings options.

However, since it's referred to as Version 3 rather than Version 2.2, it is likely to be a significant upgrade to the technology, and we anticipate it may incorporate a version similar to NVIDIA's Multi Frame Generation technology, providing options for gamers to activate 2X, 3X, or even 4X frame generation. Naturally, this update will likely also feature enhancements to latency and image fidelity.

As for when additional details about AFMF 3 will be revealed, it is reasonable to speculate that this will occur during AMD’s formal presentation of its FSR Redstone project, which aims to evolve its FSR Frame Generation into an AI-based solution that could potentially offer Multi Frame Generation-like options of 3X and 4X.

As anticipation grows for AMD’s forthcoming RDNA 5 GPUs, you don’t need to wait to enjoy high-quality gaming experiences. The Radeon RX 9070 XT, which is designed on RDNA 4 architecture and features 16GB of VRAM, already offers outstanding performance, stunning visuals, and efficient power consumption for the most demanding gaming titles available today.
