Qualcomm’s rising VR chip prices may force a Steam Frame price hike
Valve's upcoming Steam Frame VR headset may be heading toward an even higher launch price, as another key component supplier is reportedly preparing to raise prices. After already dealing with surging costs for memory and storage, the company could soon be paying more for the headset's processor as well, adding further pressure ahead of its expected release later this year.
According to a Bloomberg report published on June 26, Qualcomm has notified customers that a broad range of Snapdragon processors will become more expensive beginning September 1, 2026. The increase is said to be at least in the double digits, potentially affecting several of the chipmaker's flagship products, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 that is expected to power Valve's Steam Frame.
The timing is far from ideal. Valve is reportedly targeting a late 2026 launch for the headset, meaning the processor price increase could arrive just before production ramps up. If Qualcomm's higher costs are passed down the supply chain, the Steam Frame's retail price could climb even further.
The processor isn't the only expensive component inside the headset, either. The Steam Frame is also expected to feature 16GB of LPDDR5X unified memory alongside either 256GB or 1TB of UFS storage. Both memory and flash storage have experienced sharp price increases during the ongoing AI-driven component shortage, creating additional challenges for hardware manufacturers trying to keep prices under control.
Valve has already experienced those pressures with the Steam Machine, whose launch price ended up significantly higher than originally planned as component costs climbed. The same market conditions could now have a similar impact on the Steam Frame. With Qualcomm's reported price increase added to rising memory, storage, manufacturing, and logistics expenses, there is growing speculation that the headset could launch above the $1,000 / €860 / £740 mark.
The wider VR market has yet to see a major slowdown as a result of rising hardware costs, although there are signs that manufacturers are beginning to feel the pressure. Earlier this year, Meta increased the prices of both the Quest 3 and Quest 3S by between $50 and $100. Since Valve's headset is expected to use more premium components than mainstream standalone devices, it could prove even more vulnerable to further supply chain inflation.
With AI data centers continuing to consume large volumes of advanced chips and memory, the current market remains a difficult one for companies preparing to launch new hardware. Valve may ultimately have little choice but to pass at least some of those additional costs on to consumers if component prices continue to rise.
