Sony’s latest move strongly hints the PS6 will ditch physical media
Sony has confirmed what many gamers feared was only a matter of time: new PlayStation games will no longer be released on disc starting in January 2028. While that date is still a couple of years away, it marks the beginning of the end for physical PlayStation media - and it's a milestone that won't sit well with collectors.
The announcement came via a brief PlayStation Blog post from Sony Interactive Entertainment's Senior Director of Content Communications, Sid Shuman, who explained that the decision reflects changing consumer habits and an industry-wide shift toward digital distribution. Beginning in January 2028, all new PlayStation releases will be available digitally only, both through the PlayStation Store and retail partners.
For anyone concerned about game preservation, it's another worrying development. Physical discs have long been viewed as one of the safest ways to preserve games for future generations, and this news follows ongoing concerns surrounding the eventual closure of legacy storefronts like the PS3 and PS Vita stores. Fans who still enjoy building shelves full of boxed games are understandably unlikely to be celebrating.
There is one small piece of good news, though. Sony says the change won't affect games that have already launched physically or any titles scheduled for release before January 2028. Your existing collection isn't suddenly becoming obsolete overnight.
Perhaps the more interesting question is what this says about Sony's next console. The company hasn't officially announced the PlayStation 6, but previous reports have suggested mass production could begin in 2027, putting a potential launch sometime in 2028. If that's accurate, the timing of Sony's announcement is hard to ignore.

At its debut, the PS5 was offered in two configurations: a standard edition equipped with a disc drive and a digital-only version. Sony later introduced more flexibility for the Digital Edition by releasing a separate, detachable disc drive accessory.
It's entirely possible the PS6 becomes Sony's first mainline console designed around a digital-only ecosystem. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but with Microsoft's Project Helix also reportedly taking a more PC-like approach, the industry as a whole seems to be moving further away from physical media. One thing seems increasingly clear: the days of walking into a store to pick up a brand-new PlayStation game on disc are numbered. For some players, that future arrived years ago. For others, it's the end of an era.
