Overwatch 2 will kill its predecessor

The recent announcement of Overwatch 2 as a free-to-play game left the fans with many doubts. First, it was the possibility of the game launching with a monetization system similar to Diablo Immortal. Blizzard was quite fast, revealing that you won't be required to spend money to play the game at a competitive level and that Overwatch 2 won't even have loot boxes. But the most important question needing an answer was about the future of Overwatch. It was not clear what would happen to those players that already have an account in the game, if their progress would be transferred or if their in-game cash would be valid for the new title.

A smooth transition

Activision Blizzard has finally solved all the doubts about the future of Overwatch. When Overwatch 2 releases in October, its predecessor will be shut down and won't be playable anymore. The new game will replace the current Live Service on October 4, and this change will come with some side effects. First of all, any loot boxes that you have in Overwatch will be automatically open, and all the cosmetics will be transferred to your Overwatch 2 account. Any existing currencies that you may have in your Overwatch account will be transferred to the new game. You won't lose any of your OWL tokens, competitive points or credits, but there will be many items that you won't be able to purchase in Overwatch 2 with them as a new type of currency will be introduced with the release of the game.

Blizzard revealed all this during an Overwatch 2 Reddit AMA yesterday, where we also learned about the social features that the new game will have, which include a guild system that is actually in the works.

"We are looking to add more social systems to Overwatch 2, and a guild system is near the top of the list for us. A feature like this is a great opportunity and something we're really excited about, but it's a huge lift, not just for large sections of our team but several other departments at Blizzard. We have put significant work towards this feature, but it's too early to talk about specifics or when it might come out."

The launch of Overwatch 2 will surely cause an impact on the community of FPS players with the new features and the new monetization model. If you are currently playing Overwatch, you can continue to enjoy the game safely, knowing that none of your currencies and cosmetics will be lost when the sequel launches on October 4.
