Nvidia begins utilizing SK Hynix GDDR7 chips in its GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs

Up until now, Nvidia's GeForce RTX 50 series has been equipped with GDDR7 memory from Samsung. However, it has come to light that Nvidia has begun to utilize an alternative supplier for GDDR7 memory, SK Hynix, as reported by MEGAsizeGPU on Twitter/X.

The addition of SK Hynix GDDR7 memory could potentially enhance the worldwide availability of GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs. There have been speculations that the supply of GDDR7 memory was a bottleneck in the production of the RTX 50 series graphics cards. If those rumors hold any truth, the introduction of a second GDDR7 supplier should certainly help alleviate the situation.

NVIDIA possesses substantial authority over its memory chip sourcing, opting for SK Hynix for its AI GPU division (which is its main focus) due to their superior performance, with Micron and Samsung also producing both HBM and GDDR memory chips. This grants NVIDIA the flexibility to procure GDDR7 memory from whichever supplier can produce enough stable chips that meet the 28-32Gbps operational standards and can consistently supply those chips for the RTX 50 series GPUs.

It seems that SK Hynix is now actively promoting its latest GDDR7 memory chips, gaining traction within the RTX 5070 for the time being, but this situation is likely to evolve in the coming weeks and months, leading to a broader presence of SK Hynix GDDR7 memory modules in more RTX 50 series GPUs.

For the majority of users, having either SK Hynix or Samsung memory in their graphics card will result in negligible differences. Ultimately, these memory modules will perform at the same standard speeds, irrespective of the manufacturer. It is hoped that the introduction of SK Hynix memory will contribute to an increase in GPU availability, thus making high-end GPUs more accessible.
