Next Windows 11 update promises to boost AMD Zen 5 CPU performance

AMD has announced a collaboration with Microsoft to enhance the performance of its CPUs on Windows systems. AMD has stated that the upcoming Windows 11 version 24H2 update will bring improvements for its new Zen 5 CPUs. Despite the underperformance of the Ryzen 9000 series in recent reviews, AMD has confirmed that an optimization to the AMD-specific branch prediction code will be included in the Windows 11 version 24H2 update, which is expected to ship next month.

AMD has provided performance improvement estimates for its Ryzen 9 9950X CPU, claiming a 13% boost in games like Far Cry 6 and a 7% improvement in Cyberpunk 2077. However, the impact may not be noticeable in other games. In addition, AMD asserts that the Ryzen 9000 series could deliver approximately 10% better performance in "productivity and creative" tasks, 25% improvement in AI tasks, and 5% to 8% enhancement for gaming compared to its Ryzen 7000 chip line.

According to AMD, there is an overall 9% performance boost between the Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 9000 series and an average 6% improvement in gaming performance. While initial reviews suggested that the previous generation Ryzen 9 7950X may offer better value than the new flagship Ryzen 9 9950X, the differences in performance were minimal, with just a 1% advantage for the 9950X in gaming benchmarks at 1080p and a 3% lead in productivity tasks.

Reviewers will need to evaluate the 24H2 update with the latest Ryzen chips to validate AMD's claims of significant performance enhancements, especially as improvements are also expected for Zen 4 and Zen 3 processors.
