Intel claims a 15% performance improvement and a 30% increase in density with its 18A node
Intel recently announced that its 18A semiconductor manufacturing process is ready and will undergo trial production in the first half of 2025. This marks a significant milestone for Intel Foundry Services (IFS) as it seeks to compete with major manufacturers like TSMC.
The development of the 18A process has not been entirely smooth. Under former CEO Pat Gelsinger, Intel’s "IDM 2.0" strategy faced multiple challenges, particularly with the Intel 4 (7nm) process, which struggled to gain strong market traction. However, the 18A process is expected to help Intel regain its competitive edge in semiconductor manufacturing.
One of the key innovations of the 18A process is the Backside Power Delivery Network (BSPDN), which optimizes power distribution and improves chip performance. Additionally, the use of RibbonFET GAA transistors and increased component density could enable this process to compete directly with TSMC's most advanced technologies.

According to Intel’s plans, the first products to adopt the 18A process will include Panther Lake processors for mobile devices and next-generation Xeon server chips (Clearwater Forest). There are also rumors that Intel’s next-generation Celestial discrete GPUs may utilize this technology. Initially, Intel will prioritize deploying the 18A process for its own products before extending it to third-party partners.
At this time, there is no official confirmation regarding external companies using the 18A process, but Broadcom and several other firms are reportedly interested. With trial production scheduled for the first half of 2025, if Intel achieves a stable yield rate and ensures smooth chip integration, mass production could begin by late 2025.
