Intel and AMD collaborate, form alliance to develop x86 architecture processors
During the OCP 2024 Conference, Intel and AMD announced the establishment of the x86 ecosystem advisory group, with the participation of major hardware and software companies such as Google, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, and Red Hat. This group is formed with the objective of standardizing and simplifying the x86 architecture, enhancing compatibility, performance, and security, while also promoting innovation across the entire x86 ecosystem.
The group aims to unify additions and changes to the x86 ISA, ensuring that new features are integrated and deployed consistently across all x86-based platforms. This includes open extensions and AI-related enhancements such as Intel's AMX, security features, and architectural simplification technologies like X86S.

The collaboration between Intel and AMD, supported by leading companies, could bring significant benefits to the x86 ecosystem by reducing fragmentation, improving performance and security, and making it easier for software developers to build compatible applications for the x86 platform. However, coordinating new standards will take time to implement, especially given the long design cycles of current processors.
Despite the collaboration, Intel and AMD remain direct competitors in the market. They will drive the joint development of the x86 architecture while safeguarding their individual interests. The x86 ecosystem advisory group is a strategic step to ensure that x86 continues to be a leading architecture, competing with challenges from ARM and RISC-V.
This collaboration could make a significant difference in the future of the semiconductor industry. However, only time will tell whether this move is sufficient to sustain the position of x86 or not.
