The fans of the Mechwarrior series will have to wait a bit longer than expected to play the new installment of the franchise based on FASA Corporation tabletop game and RPG Battletech. Developer Piranha Games has just announced that Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries will launch in December instead of September 10 like it was originally planned. The main reasons behind this change seem to be the increasing amount of important games launches in this month, as well as the need of a bit more time to work on the localization of the game in several languages.
A delay in the release date is quite common and it's not so much of a problem for the players if the final product is good enough, but there is more tho this announcement than the delay itself. Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries is coming out as an Epic Games Store exclusive, and this is going to be a real shock for all those that already pre-ordered the game thinking that they would be able to play it on Steam. This way, Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries joins the list of games that have been "stolen" by Epic Games. A similar thing happened with Shenmue 3 and the players who had backed the game ended with the opportunity of getting refunds which Epic Games decided to pay for. Now, Piranha Games is also offering refunds to those that don´t want to play through their platform or wait until Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries is available in other platforms. We don´t know who is going to pay for those but it seems that this situation could be something that we should get used tom because it's likely to happen again in the near future with other titles.
It's logical that people with a sizeable library of games on Steam wants to keep adding games to it, saving themselves the trouble of using another gaming platform. It's also quite logical that game developers decide to bet on a distribution platform that is getting more popular on a daily basis, and that gives them a much better profit.
